How to convert MB to GB

There are 1000 MB in a GB, so divide the number of megabytes by 1000:

GB = MB ÷ 1000

For binary gigabytes (GiB), divide by 1024 instead. 2500 MB is 2.5 GB in decimal and 2.44 GB in binary.

MB to GB worked example: 2,500 MB divided by 1,000 is 2.5 GB in decimal units, and 2,500 MiB divided by 1,024 is 2.4414 GiB in binary units.

GB vs MB

A gigabyte is the bigger unit. One GB holds 1000 MB, so a 750 MB file is three quarters of a gigabyte, and a 4 GB phone plan covers about 4000 MB of data. When you compare sizes listed in different units, put them in the same unit first. The converter does that for you, and the "Same size in every unit" table lists the value in bytes, KB, MB, GB and TB at once.

MB to GB examples

  • 100 MB ÷ 1000 = 0.1 GB, or 0.098 GB in binary.
  • 500 MB ÷ 1000 = 0.5 GB, or 0.488 GB in binary.
  • 1000 MB ÷ 1000 = 1 GB, or 0.977 GB in binary.
  • 1024 MB ÷ 1024 = exactly 1 GB in binary, or 1.024 GB in decimal.
  • 16,384 MB ÷ 1024 = 16 GB, the size of a 16 GB RAM kit as system tools report it.

When to use 1000 and when to use 1024

Use 1000 for storage you buy, iPhone and Mac storage, and cloud plans. Use 1024 when you read sizes in Windows or check RAM, which is built in powers of two. The two answers differ by about 2.4% per step. For a 4000 MB video that is 4 GB against 3.91 GB.

How much fits in a gigabyte?

Dividing 1000 MB by a typical file size gives a quick feel for space. These are rough counts in decimal units:

File typeTypical sizeAbout how many per GB
Phone photo4 MB250
MP3 song (4 minutes, 128 kbps)4 MB250
Ebook (EPUB)1 MB1000
HD video stream3 GB per hour20 minutes
App update150 MB6

Real sizes vary with the camera, the bit rate and the format, so treat these as starting points. Netflix lists HD streaming at up to about 3 GB per hour, which is where the video row comes from.

MB to GB in a spreadsheet

If a column of sizes is in MB, put =A2/1000 in the next column for decimal GB, or =A2/1024 for binary GB. Wrap it in ROUND to keep two decimals: =ROUND(A2/1000,2). For the reverse direction use GB to MB, and for smaller numbers KB to MB.

Frequently asked questions

How many MB are in 1 GB?

1000 MB in decimal units and 1024 MB in binary units.

Is 1000 MB equal to 1 GB?

Yes, in the decimal system used by storage makers. In the binary system 1000 MB is 0.977 GB.

What is 1024 MB in GB?

Exactly 1 GB in binary units, or 1.024 GB in decimal units.

How many GB is 5000 MB?

5 GB in decimal units, or 4.88 GB in binary units.

How do I convert MB to GB quickly?

Move the decimal point three places to the left: 3500 MB becomes 3.5 GB.

Does my phone use 1000 or 1024?

iPhones report storage in decimal units, so 1 GB is 1000 MB there. Android phones vary by maker, so check whether the numbers line up with the decimal or binary answer.
