How many GB in a TB?

There are 1000 GB in a TB in the decimal units used on drive boxes, by cloud plans and by macOS. In the binary units Windows uses there are 1024 GB in a TB. So 1000 gigabytes is exactly 1 TB on the box, and 1024 GB is exactly 1 TiB.

TB = GB ÷ 1000   or   TiB = GiB ÷ 1024

GB to TB worked example: 2,000 GB divided by 1,000 is 2 TB in decimal units, and 2,000 GiB divided by 1,024 is 1.9531 TiB in binary units.

GB to TB examples

  • 1000 GB ÷ 1000 = 1 TB, or 0.977 TB in binary.
  • 2000 GB ÷ 1000 = 2 TB, or 1.95 TB in binary.
  • 512 GB ÷ 1000 = 0.512 TB, about half a terabyte.
  • 750 GB ÷ 1000 = 0.75 TB, or 0.73 TB in binary.

Terabyte vs gigabyte

A terabyte is 1000 times bigger than a gigabyte. A phone with 256 GB of storage holds about a quarter of a terabyte, and a 2 TB external drive holds as much as eight of those phones. At about 4 MB per photo, 1 TB holds around 250,000 photos. At 3 GB per hour of HD video it holds over 300 hours. A large game install of 100 GB takes a tenth of it.

The chart image adds what Windows reports for a drive sold in decimal gigabytes. Windows divides the true byte count by 1024 at every step, so a 1000 GB drive appears as 0.909 TB, or 931 GB.

Planning storage in TB

Cloud plans and drives are sold in decimal units, so 1000 GB of photos fits a 1 TB plan on paper. In practice, leave room: file systems reserve space and a nearly full drive slows down. Keeping 10 to 20% free is a common rule. If you are adding up folders that Windows reports in GB, those numbers are binary, so switch the converter to Binary before you compare with the drive size Windows shows.

Use TB to GB for the reverse direction, or MB to GB if your sizes are smaller. The byte converter shows the same value from bits to petabytes.
