How many MB in a GB?

There are 1000 MB in a GB in decimal units, the ones used for drives, phones, cloud storage and downloads. In binary units, used for RAM and by Windows, there are 1024 MB in a GB. So 1 GB to MB is either 1000 or 1024, depending on which system you are matching.

MB = GB × 1000   or   MB = GB × 1024

GB to MB worked example: 1.5 GB times 1,000 is 1,500 MB in decimal units, and 1.5 GiB times 1,024 is 1,536 MiB in binary units.

GB to MB examples

  • 1 GB = 1000 MB, or 1024 MB in binary.
  • 1.5 GB × 1000 = 1500 MB, or 1536 MB in binary.
  • 4 GB = 4000 MB, or 4096 MB in binary.
  • 8 GB = 8000 MB, or 8192 MB in binary.
  • 16 GB = 16,000 MB, or 16,384 MB in binary.

RAM uses 1024 MB per GB

Memory chips are built in powers of two, so RAM sizes use the binary count. A 16 GB stick holds 16 × 1024 = 16,384 MB, and that is the number BIOS screens, Task Manager and virtual machine settings expect. If a program asks how much memory to give a virtual machine in MB, use 1024 MB per GB: 4 GB is 4096 MB and 8 GB is 8192 MB.

Storage is different. A 64 GB phone or memory card holds 64,000 decimal MB, and its usable space shows lower once the system takes its share.

Downloads, video and mobile data

Large downloads are usually listed in GB, while progress bars and some settings screens count in MB. A 1.5 GB movie download is 1500 MB, and a 45 GB game is 45,000 MB. When a launcher says 2048 MB remain, that is 2 GB in binary units or 2.05 GB in decimal.

Data plans are sold in GB. Most carriers do not say whether they count 1000 or 1024 MB per GB, so the decimal answer is the safer estimate: a 2 GB plan is 2000 MB, and a 150 MB app update uses 0.15 GB of it. Frequently asked questions

How many MB is 1 GB?

1000 MB in decimal units and 1024 MB in binary units.

How many MB is 2 GB of RAM?

2048 MB, because RAM uses the binary count.

What is 16 GB in MB?

16,000 MB in decimal units, or 16,384 MB in binary units, which is the figure for 16 GB of RAM.

How many megabytes are in a gig?

A gig is a gigabyte, so 1000 MB in decimal units or 1024 MB in binary units.

How do I convert GB to MB in my head?

Move the decimal point three places to the right: 2.75 GB is 2750 MB.

How do I convert GB to MB in Excel?

Multiply by 1000, for example =A2*1000, or by 1024 for binary MB.
