TB to GB converter

Convert terabytes to gigabytes. Multiply by 1000 for the gigabytes drive makers use, or by 1024 for binary gigabytes. The chart below shows what Windows reports for common drive sizes.

How many gigs is a terabyte?

A terabyte is 1000 gigabytes, so 1 TB to GB is 1000 GB on a drive box, in macOS and for cloud storage. In binary units a terabyte (TiB) is 1024 GiB. Windows reports drive sizes in binary units, which is why a new 1 TB drive shows up as about 931 GB.

GB = TB × 1000   or   GiB = TiB × 1024

TB to GB worked example: 2 TB times 1,000 is 2,000 GB in decimal units, and 2 TiB times 1,024 is 2,048 GiB in binary units.

TB to GB examples

  • 1 TB × 1000 = 1000 GB. Windows shows 931 GB.
  • 2 TB × 1000 = 2000 GB. Windows shows about 1863 GB.
  • 4 TB × 1000 = 4000 GB. Windows shows about 3725 GB.
  • 5 TB × 1000 = 5000 GB. Windows shows about 4657 GB.
  • 0.5 TB × 1000 = 500 GB, or 512 GB in binary units.

Why Windows shows less than the box says

A drive sold as 2 TB holds 2,000,000,000,000 bytes. Windows divides that by 1024 three times and reports about 1863 GB, or 1.82 TB. The bytes are all there; the label uses a different count. macOS has used decimal units since version 10.6, so Finder shows the same drive as 2 TB.

TB to GB conversion chart for drive sizes: 0.5 TB is 500 GB, and Windows shows 465.66 GB; 1 TB is 1,000 GB, and Windows shows 931.32 GB; 2 TB is 2,000 GB, and Windows shows 1,862.65 GB; 4 TB is 4,000 GB, and Windows shows 3,725.29 GB; 6 TB is 6,000 GB, and Windows shows 5,587.94 GB, and more.

To get the Windows number yourself, convert the drive size to bytes with Decimal selected. Then type that byte count with bytes as the From unit and read the base 1024 column of "Same size in every unit". 2,000,000,000,000 bytes shows as 1862.65 GiB there.

Which drive size do you need?

Add up what you plan to store in GB, then divide by 1000 for TB. Add at least 20% for growth and free space. For example, 600 GB of photos and 300 GB of video makes 900 GB, and with headroom that points to a 2 TB drive rather than a 1 TB one, which Windows would show as only 931 GB.

After formatting, a drive also loses a little space to the file system. On a second drive used only for data the loss is small. A system drive shows much less free space because Windows itself takes room. For the reverse direction use GB to TB, and for megabytes go on to GB to MB or the byte converter.

Frequently asked questions

How many GB are in 1 TB?

1000 GB in decimal units and 1024 GB in binary units.

Why does my 1 TB drive show 931 GB?

Windows divides by 1024 instead of 1000. 1,000,000,000,000 bytes divided by 1,073,741,824 is 931.3.

How many GB is 2 TB?

2000 GB on the box. Windows shows about 1863 GB.

How many GB per TB?

1000 GB per TB in decimal units, 1024 GiB per TiB in binary units.

How much is a terabyte in GB for RAM or binary sizes?

1024 GB. Binary sizes are written TiB and GiB when people want to be exact.

How many MB are in a terabyte?

1,000,000 MB in decimal units, or 1,048,576 MB in binary units.
